Treasure box, organizer, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, birthday, or wedding gift. Decorative high quality burl jewelry box.
Thuya wood pronounced (twee-ya), comes from the Thuya tree. This highly valued conifer from the cedar family is native to the forests of the Atlas Mountains in Morrocco, northwest Africa. Skilled Moroccan artisans have made beautiful carvings from Thuya burl for many generations. Because of it’s high oil content it takes a very high polish and does not need to be stabilized.
The most unique figuring comes from the burl of the Thuya tree. These burls develop underground at the base of the trunk. Thuya trees reach maturity over many decades. They are around 70 years old before they are harvested. Buried in the ground is where the small burls are discovered, harvested and distributed by auction to the local artisans of Morocco. Due to a careful policy of sustainability and high demand, small burl products are never made in large quantities. The burl presents a light golden to deep tan color with beautiful swirling patterns. Some pieces show excellent “eyes” highly desired by knife makers and figure carvers alike. It is also known for a rich aroma similar to its cousin, the cedar tree.
We offer both high quality carvings and large blocks, as well as knife blocks, knife scales, and pen blanks. Write for a quantity quote. All of our Thuya burl ships from Arizona, USA.
